We have asked our regular donors, as many as possible, if it was OK to donate any money currently in the bank account and not yet transferred to Cambodia, to be used to help the Nymboida community,

This is some of the devastation to us, our friends and our neighbors.

We don't want to show too many photo's as it's too distressful for many locals but here is a link to photos and video of the event (be aware and respectful)

Link to Nymboida Fire Photos

Once the decision was made to assist the Nymboida community. We began by asking the community what was needed most. Getting access to water was the number one priority. With so much of the water supply infrastructure damaged, many people had no access to running water. So we purchased as many fittings as we could. Not that it was much with the $600 that was in the account and available. The hardest part was sourcing the parts, we had to go as far away as Lismore for these.

All the bits purchased

Thanks to everyone who has donated and attended events in the past and we hope everyone is ok with our decision.

If anyone wants to donate extra, you can donate to us and we'll spend it on essentials for the community.

Financially

The Nymboida Hall Committee convened a quick meeting and decided not to charge us the fee for hall usage ,which was wonderful of them. After paying other incidentals etc we
ended up raising $1106.90. We also recieved $90 extra in donations before the event from generous locals,
which was unexpected but very much appreciated.

A big, big thanks to everyone who donated meals, performed on the night and everyone who attended.

Also,
just a note, we are not a charity. We are raising these funds to donate
to registered charities (Good Will and C.H.O.I.C.E) in
Cambodia. Why those ? because we spent a lot of time when we lived in
Cambodia making sure these guys were the real deal and they are !
He will remain unnamed but has been assisting our efforts regularly for seven years. Thank you for all you have done.

A huge thank you also to family, friends and locals who continue to give in so many ways.

Trev's mum never misses the chance to donate to us directly every time we visit her in Brisbane. Thanks Ann for your continued support.

Toni's Mum, Ann has been holding market stalls where she lives in Victoria and donates all of the profit to 'Help Cambodia'. She goes by the name of 'Anni Buttons' and often travels long distances and spends many hours of her personal time making and selling beautiful hand crafted items.
The sleepy little seaside town of Sihanoukville has gone the way of many small tourist towns and become a concrete jungle of highrises and casinos for wealthy holiday makers.
It's controversially part of China's 'One Belt One Road' initiative and the scale of development is staggering by any standard, anywhere. Food Drops
We were again lucky enough to time our visit with the monthly food drops. We started these many years ago as a way to encourage village parents to bring their children to the Goodwill Centre where they would benefit from free education. These families could not afford to send their children to the government schools so this alternative works well and benefits so many local families.

I always like to do some craft with the students and we need two sessions as some of the children only attend in the mornings and some only in the afternoon. Its sometimes difficult to find a craft that's suitable for most age groups but after researching I found some spinners made from cardboard
and string. The kids had never made them before and they seemed to enjoy it.

Phnom Penh
We headed to the Capitol city, Phnom Penh next to see Somnang. He is in his third year of university studying engineering and doing really well, so well in fact that he has been offered a job. He now works full time and continues his studies. We are really proud of him and the dedicated young man he has become.
We shouted him to a special meal at an exclusive buffet restaurant where he ate his fill of crab and giant prawns. He's hopeful he'll finish his Civil Engineering studies at University within 18 months

Thinking Caps for acts

So put your thinking caps on and start thinking about what act YOU are going to put in next year to make the event even better!

Volunteers to Help Out

As its getting a bit too much for us to try and do everything, minor mistakes are being made in the mad rush to do it all (not getting to record the acts properly, etc). We really need volunteers next year to handle: door greeter, raffle ticket sales and someone to press the play button occasionally. If you would like to help out, we'd love to hear from you and we'll let you know what's expected.

Financially

After paying for hall rental and advertising, we ended up raising $937.80. We had $125 in donations from generous locals and people who couldn't make it on the night because of other commitments, which was unexpected but very much appreciated.

A big, big thanks to everyone who donated meals, performed on the night and everyone who attended.

Also, just a note, we are not a charity, we are raising these funds to donate to registered charities (Good Will, C.H.O.I.C.E and C.O.L.T) in Cambodia. Why those ? becasue we spent a lot of time when we lived in Cambodia making sure these guys were the real deal and they are !

Lips 'n Sync

The next fund raiser will be the annual Lips n' Sync concert in April (Onlynten weeks away) so its time start thinking of an act to perform. We hope we see everyone there Previous years events have always proved..... entertaining. Info on the last event can be found here so you can see what it is all about !

Donations Transfers

Because we don't visit Cambodia as often we have found a way using Citibank to transfer money that's feeless, with an excellent exchange rate so we currently transfer sums when the exchange rate is good rather than have to take a punt on our next visit coinciding with a decent exchange rate !

We still have one student going through university undertaking anand sponsoring the awesome work being done at Choice in Phnom Penh and the Goodwill centre who have gained official Cambodia accreditation under the new name of Bomnong Lor in Sihanoukville.
Another great night of entertainment in very soggy conditions. Unfortunately many locals from across the Clarence Valley either couldn't get out, or sensibly turned back due to the flooding.... so the numbers were down but as they say, the show must go on.

As everyone probably knows by now, this event is held to raise funds for various charities and projects we support in Cambodia. You can read about those by going back through this blog. The way the evening works is that locals donate some wonderful meals and their time to entertain the masses by lip syncing to a favourite tune. We play the tunes through the night on the big screen before the local stars start.

Financially

After paying for raffle prizes and hall rental, we ended up raising $729.30. We had $200 in donations from some of the people who couldn't make it on the night because of the rain, which was unexpected but appreciated.

Hopefully everyone had an awesome night and we hope to see you next year. The event just keeps getting bigger and better each year with this one being the third so far !

Big big thanks to everyone who donated meals, performed on the night and everyone who attended.

What a fantastic night this was. I mean the crowd whistling, cheering, clapping, screaming kind of fantastic. First we all enjoyed an absolutely delicious buffet prepared by our talented local gourmets followed by some of the best musical performances ever to grace the stage of the Nymboida hall.

A HUGE thank you to all the volunteers who helped organise the event, all the volunteers who came down and helped clean and set the hall up to make it a magical night. Thanks also to the culinary whizzes from all over Nymboida who donated meals for the event and Phil W for his mixing skills. Finally, thank you to the musicians who really made the night such a success. Annie and Al, locals from Nymboida, Sam.I.Am from Pillar Valley and of course the guitar virtuoso Geordie Little.
Concert Fundraiser

We have some exciting news. We were contacted some time ago by Australian born, German based musician Geordie Little who wanted to know if we were interested in hosting a concert at the Nymboida Hall. Geordie will be touring and promoting his latest album from Adelaide to Byron Bay in October/November so we jumped at the chance and talked with the local Community Group, NCGI, as well as some of our wonderful local musicians Tommy Feather and Annie & Al, to turn it into a great night.

Cambodia Visit

As a reminder, we will be visiting Cambodia in February 2017 along with one of our long term donors. Its really exciting to be able to share our projects with our donors to reinforce that the donations are really making a difference. Its not only important for us to see how the projects we support are going but also to catch up with the teachers, families and students that we support.
If any of our supporters would like to tag along on the trip with us just let us know.

Both University students that we support are well and their study is ongoing. Sok Mong will be sitting his final exams next week and we are so excited for him. This opportunity has been life changing for Mong and his family. Seng Somnang is in the second year of his Engineering degree. The extra English classes that we fund allowed Somnang to pass the English component of his first year. We will continue these English classes even though it is not required for his second year of uni.
Kolab is one of the teachers at the Goodwill Center and she and her family also live in the village. Kolab takes care of the food drops each month and let's us know how the families are going. She also ensures that the children of these families attend the center in exchange for the food parcels.

Concert Fundraiser

We have a huge musical event being organised for November. Geordie Little, an Australian born German based artist will be playing at our local hall as part of his Australian regional tour. He will be supported by some local acts and there will be the usual delicious buffet dinner available. More on that soon.

Back to Cambodia

and then we're off to Cambodia in March 2017 after two years away. We need to ensure that all of the projects are running smoothly and touch base with everyone who assists us in Cambodia. It's also wonderful to see everyone again and spend some time with the children and teachers at the Goodwill Center.

Please be assured that we pay for all the airfares and accommodation ourselves from our own pocket making sure ALL donated funds are used to support the peoples and organisations we've targeted in Cambodia. One donor has already indicated they would like to come with us us March, and we're more than happy for anyone who donates or helps out to come along, contact Toni to let her know if you're interested.

We were quite nervous before the event, as usual. We worry about getting the number of people required to make the effort of running the event worthwhile, whether we'll have enough food and if people will enjoy the evening. In hindsight we could have saved ourselves the concern because the night was such a fantastic success.

Christmas gift ideas

We will be holding a stall at the Nymboida Twilight markets on Friday 18th December and will be focusing on gift ideas for Christmas. We sell scarves, sarong bags and soaps made by ladies in the poorest villagers who use the sales as a way to provide food and education for their children. Selling these products at our market stalls ensures that the proceeds benefit these families.
Ongoing projects

While we don't communicate everything that's happening all the time, all of our projects are ongoing, which is exactly what your generous donations are used for, similarly when you come and support events. We would like to express our gratitude to all who assist us with our efforts.

While we have had new donors join our cause we have also had a few who, for changed personal reasons have withdrawn support. This level of uncertainty hasn't allowed us to take on any new projects as we want to make sure we have enough financial support to continue with all the on-going projects. We also have the double whammy of the continually worsening exchange rate as Cambodia uses the U.S Dollar. So while there may be a dearth of new and exciting news, the reality is, all our projects are funded and we can continue only because of the generosity of those who have helped out.

University scholarships - update

Sok Mong is in his last year of university studying Tourism and English. He has been passing his subjects well and we are confident that he will achieve his goals and become the first member of his family to obtain a university degree. We are so proud to have enabled him via the donations from our events and supporters, you have made it possible.

Seng Somnang is continuing with his Engineering studies. We have funded extra one-on-one English classes and I can already see the difference in his written English. He needed extra tuition in English as many of the STEM courses at University are taught in English and he was struggling.

Sponsored university students

We currently pay for two young men to attend university. Seng Somnang attends uni in the Capitol, Phnom Penh and Sok Mong is a student at Life University in Sihanoukville. Sok Mong is doing really well with his studies and passes all of his subjects except Christianity. Why do they study Christianity when they are Buddhists? When we asked Mong he said it was just part of his course but didnt know why.

Somnang is having difficulty with English so we are investigating extra classes for him. He is very excited and grateful to be given the opportunity. We are hoping he'll benefit from the classes and improve his marks because if he fails the English component he fails the whole course.

Donors

We have several wonderful people who have set up regular donations into the fund raising account. Regular donations allow us to commit to projects that are ongoing. If we had more regular donations (a few dollars each week or fortnight from several people goes a long way) we would be able to fund more longer term projects in education and health, our two main priorities. If you are interested in donating, you can set up a regular funds transfer from your bank account to the fundraising account, details of which are here

We always have such fantastic support for these events

We made $498.80 which is alot lower than usual so we have probably exhausted the Nymboida area of donate-able items. This $500 is however, enough to pay for two years of university in Cambodia.

In the past it has been difficult disposing of the items that didn't sell. It usually involves making multiple trips to the secondhand shops in town and the CVC have in the past donated a free rubbish load. This time we were able to donate the remainder of the items to Gurehlgam, an indigenous support group in Grafton. They will be holding a fundraising sale in the next few weeks and they were thrilled to come out and collect the remaining four ute loads. We were really pleased to pass the items on so that someone else benefits.

Donations of items to Raise Funds

We have been collecting items for the sale over the last few months and our verandah has been a mine field of trip hazards but we will be transporting all of the donated items to the hall during this week. You can still drop goods off at our house, or we can collect them from you. Please contact Toni p: 6649 4263 or e: cookie1616@gmail.com if you want to help with donations.

Sale Day

We will be having the jumble sale in conjunction with the Nymboida Market on 21 June a the Nymboida Community Hall. In years past our jumble sale has attracted a large number of people and with the regular crowd who enjoy the market for the social aspect this should benefit not just us but the stall holders as well.

We hope to see you there !

The opportunity recently presented itself to make a donation to help them establish a health clinic for some of the very poor at their upcoming new centre. The aims of the clinic as set out by COLT

The medical clinic
In the new community centre there will also be space for a medical clinic which we hope to realise in cooperation with the German NGO - Chibodia www.chibodia.org. Since 2011 they have run a mobile health clinic in this area with a well-trained medical team. They are limited in what they can do because they have no permanent, safe place to store medicines and medical supplies. At Colt they will have a permanent clinic so that they will be able to offer more medical care and the people in the area will know where to go if they need medical help and advice. The Colt social worker will work closely with the medical team so that any underlying social problems will receive proper attention. We will also set up an educational programme with workshops and training sessions on subjects related to health care such as hygiene, pregnancy, HIV/aids and social subjects such as domestic violence, drug abuse etc.

Jumble Sale

Just a small reminder ahead of the impending biannual Jumble Sale. We rely on goods donated to sell at the sale, our biggest fundraising event. You can drop goods off at our house or we can collect them from you. Please contact Toni p: 6649 4263 or e: cookie1616@gmail.com if you want to help with donations.

We will be having the jumble sale in conjunction with the Nymboida Market on 21 June.

If you are interested in donating, you can set up a regular funds transfer from your bank account to the fundraising account, details of which are here
Everything was awesome for the Princess 'n Pirate disco at Coutts Crossing Hall. A smaller turnout than we'd hoped but with some momentum we can make it a bigger event next year and the kids that did attend had an awesome time. A huge thank you to SMILE productions for donating their time and coming all the way from Coffs Harbour. If you are looking for a professional organisation to run an event for children, Andrew and his crew do a wonderful job. Also, a thank you to the Nymboida Canoe Centre for allowing us to use their bus to take the kids from Nymboida to Coutts Crossing and to Bob Warner for volunteering his time to drive them all and of course to all the parents and kids that supported the event
Art to inspire creativity

An art session has become one of our regular activities during our yearly visits. The teachers and students really look forward to it. This year we enlisted the help of local Nymboida artist Pamela Denise who donated the materials and expertise. Pamela donated a workshop where Toni learnt the process of making the items and also how to deliver the workshop to the children herself. It turned out to be the best art session we have ever held. We usually hang the art in the centre so that everyone can enjoy them but the children loved their dragonflies so much they all wanted to take them home to show their parents. Why not let them have a little beauty in their homes?

Just back from an exciting and enlightening trip with Toni and Trev to see their Cambodia. The groups they help support (Goodwill centre, COLT and CHOICE) are doing fantastic work providing food education and clean water for the poorest families so the children have a chance to get an education, also helping women to become self sufficient making soap, clothes and bags which can be sold to give them an income. Sihanoukville

The main port and largest coastal town in Cambodia, the town were we lived in 2011. Returning was like a homecoming of sorts.

Exchange Rate

We took A$7000 of donations to Cambodia, A$500 was donated to CHOICE, the rest was converted to US Dollars, with the currently deteriorating exchange rate we received US$4930. Some of this was used to buy the Sarong Bags from COLT, these will be available for sale at the Nymboida Markets. The remainder we deposited into the Cambodian account to fund our on-going projects. As mentioned in the last post, we are now unable to take on any more projects amd we're concerned we may struggle to fund the current projects.

Free classes for the village

That night we sat in on the English and computer classes at the Goodwill Center, both of these classes are funded with your donations. Buntha is really pleased with the results of the children. The children attend classes based on knowledge not on year level so that classes may have students aged five sitting beside children aged twelve if the older student hasn't had the opportunity to attend school previously. The children have never used a computer before, as it is not in the public school curriculum. Not until University are they given that opportunity and most cannot afford that luxury. Two of the students now have employment in design businesses in town due to these classes.
Sambath teaches the English classes five nights a week. The children are now writing and reading whole sentences in English. It reinforced to us the benefits of our fundraising efforts. These classes are open to anyone in the surrounding village.
Dinner with friends

Once again we were in the same place at the same time. Four of the past managers of the Goodwill Center and the teachers had a wonderful dinner at the Small Hotel, owned by Henrik who founded the Center. Thank you to Henrik and Mom for looking after us all. It was a fantastic night and great to catch up with everyone in a more relaxed atmosphere.
