Concert Fundraiser

We have some exciting news. We were contacted some time ago by Australian born, German based musician Geordie Little who wanted to know if we were interested in hosting a concert at the Nymboida Hall. Geordie will be touring and promoting his latest album from Adelaide to Byron Bay in October/November so we jumped at the chance and talked with the local Community Group, NCGI, as well as some of our wonderful local musicians Tommy Feather and Annie & Al, to turn it into a great night.

When and Where

6:00pm Friday 4th November at Nymboida Hall. A buffet will be available with yummy food donated by locals to help us raise funds for the various projects we support in Cambodia and NCGI. 

Bookings

Bookings are essential for catering purposes.
Tickets are $10 per head. Buffet dinner $10 per head.

Cambodia Visit

As a reminder, we will be visiting Cambodia in February 2017 along with one of our long term donors. Its really exciting to be able to share our projects with our donors to reinforce that the donations are really making a difference.  Its not only important for us to see how the projects we support are going but also to catch up with the teachers, families and students that we support.

Long time no post

We apologise for being shoddy with the updates but things are going along so smoothly that there's not much to report.

  Both University students that we support are well and their study is ongoing. Sok Mong will be sitting his final exams next week and we are so excited for him. This opportunity has been life changing for Mong and his family. Seng Somnang is in the second year of his Engineering degree. The extra English classes that we fund allowed Somnang to pass the English component of his first year. We will continue these English classes even though it is not required for his second year of uni.

The groups and projects we support in Cambodia are doing an awesome job and continue to do so.

Kolab is one of the teachers at the Goodwill Center and she and her family also live in the village. Kolab takes care of the food drops each month and let's us know how the families are going. She also ensures that the children of these families attend the center in exchange for the food parcels.

Concert Fundraiser

We have a huge musical event being organised for November.  Geordie Little, an Australian born German based artist will be playing at our local hall as part of his Australian regional tour. He will be supported by some local acts and there will be the usual delicious buffet dinner available. More on that soon.

Back to Cambodia

and then we're off to Cambodia in March 2017 after two years away. We need to ensure that all of the projects are running smoothly and touch base with everyone who assists us in Cambodia. It's also wonderful to see everyone again and spend some time with the children and teachers at the Goodwill Center.

Please be assured that we pay for all the airfares and accommodation ourselves from our own pocket making sure ALL donated funds are used to support the peoples and organisations we've targeted in Cambodia.  One donor has already indicated they would like to come with us us March, and we're more than happy for anyone who donates or helps out to come along, contact Toni to let her know if you're interested.

Lips 'n Sync a huge success

We were quite nervous before the event, as usual. We worry about getting the number of people required to make the effort of running the event worthwhile, whether we'll have enough food and if people will enjoy the evening. In hindsight we could have saved ourselves the concern because the night was such a fantastic success.

Lips in' Sync 2016

Plans are underway for the 2016 'Lips N Sync' charity event. Put the date aside for an awesome evening on 20 February 2016. Last years event was fantastic ..... heaps of fun and will live on in the annals of Nymboida's musical history. Some of the acts were so good that they were repeated at a local Australia day event.

Toni is seeking donations of home cooked meals for the buffet. Please let me know if you can help out. 

You get a delicious smorgasbord meal, donated by awesome locals from Nymboida, and some great entertainment.  The door charge is $15 for Adults, $5 per child. All proceeds go to our projects in Cambodia.  Don't forget to BYO drinks.

Sihanoukville

The main port and largest coastal town in Cambodia, the town were we lived in 2011. Returning was like a homecoming of sorts.

Exchange Rate

We took A$7000 of donations to Cambodia, A$500 was donated to CHOICE, the rest was converted to US Dollars, with the currently deteriorating exchange rate we received US$4930.  Some of this was used to buy the Sarong Bags from COLT, these will be available for sale at the Nymboida Markets.  The remainder we deposited into the Cambodian account to fund our on-going projects. As mentioned in the last post, we are now unable to take on any more projects amd we're concerned we may struggle to fund the current projects.

Free classes for the village 

That night we sat in on the English and computer classes at the Goodwill Center, both of these classes are funded with your donations.  Buntha is really pleased with the results of the children. The children attend classes based on knowledge not on year level so that classes may have students aged five sitting beside children aged twelve if the older student hasn't had the opportunity to attend school previously. The children have never used a computer before, as it is not in the public school curriculum. Not until University are they given that opportunity and most cannot afford that luxury. Two of the students now have employment in design businesses in town due to these classes.
Sambath teaches the English classes five nights a week. The children are now writing and reading whole sentences in English. It reinforced to us the benefits of our fundraising efforts.  These classes are open to anyone in the surrounding village.

Once again we were in the same place at the same time. Four of the past managers of the Goodwill Center and the teachers had a wonderful dinner at the Small Hotel, owned by Henrik who founded the Center. Thank you to Henrik and Mom for looking after us all. It was a fantastic night and great to catch up with everyone in a more relaxed atmosphere.

All over bar the unpacking...

Toni is back at home after a whirlwind trip, we'll have a couple of posts coming, to keep people updated.  Most of our projects are up and running, with little work now needed from our side, thanks to the help from our contacts in Cambodia.  What we're mainly over there for is to make sure the projects we fund are running well and make sure the money that's donated is used in the best possible way by touching base with everyone.

Phnom Penh

This year, the clothing we'd had kindly donated was delivered to CHOICE, who support the poorest of the poor on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital.  We also made a A$500 donation to the organisation to support the awesome work they do.  CHOICE was started by Ross and a small group of ex-pats.  Ross is an Australian from Geelong.

The clothes are well deserved and were well received. As always it's very confrontational to visit these villages.

We also purchased items made at COLT, another organisation doing a great job in Cambodia.  These we on sell at the local Nymboida Market, so any locals wanting one, make sure you catch up with Toni at the next Market.

We also managed to meet with Seng Somnang, a young man who we are sponsoring through University in Phnom Penh.  He's currently in his first year of Civil Engineering and doing well.

As we had Toni's mother Anne with us, we spent a couple days in Phnom Penh showing her the sites, sounds and yes... smells, of Cambodia's capital city.
